How to wash your down pillow

Soft, fluffy and just generally wonderful! Have you invested in the pillow of your dreams? Here’s how to care for and wash it so that it keeps its fine quality.

With a down pillow made of first-class down, you get that soft, fluffy, almost "whipped" feeling that only down can give. “A good pillow is important for a good night's sleep, and an investment in your well-being,” says Grete Edvardsen, at Mille Notti.

- Our down pillows contain first-class down from Europe and are recommended by the Asthma Allergy Nordic organisation. They’re also audited by IDFL (International Down and Feather Testing Laboratory) to guarantee that there has been no live plucking of down and there has been no force feeding in the breeding of the birds.

Pillows should be washed as infrequently as possible to maintain their volume and fluffy feel.

- Using a durable pillow protector that protects against dust, moisture and stains is a good trick. Our organic cotton pillow protectors do all that, and also give you a crisp, cool feeling. An extra layer of luxury between pillow and pillowcase!

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY DOWN PILLOW - AND HOW DO I WASH IT?

Here’s Grete's advice:

  • Keep your pillow fresh for a long time with a pillow protector. You won’t need to wash it as often.

  • Shake, puff up and air the pillow regularly so that the down is evenly distributed and the pillow retains its freshness, fluffiness and volume.

  • Wash the pillow as infrequently as possible, as the down deteriorates with each wash. For a proper clean, wash in a washing machine at 60 degrees, and consider programming an extra rinse.

  • Don’t use fabric softener.

  • Important - choose the right detergent. Use a soap-based detergent, as ordinary detergents contain surfactants that damage the down. They break down the natural oils in the down and the result is a flat, dull pillow that loses its fluffiness.

We recommend Down Wash by Five Oceans.

Drying is crucial. Down and feathers can withstand water, but you can damage the cover if you don’t dry it properly. It can become lumpy and, in some cases, mould can grow inside.

  • Always tumble dry on low heat with a few tennis balls. Never air dry it.

  • Pause the tumble dryer, take the pillow out, and shake it so that the contents are evenly distributed and dry better.

  • Even when the cycle ends automatically and the pillow feels dry on the outside, it can still be damp on the inside, so take it out, smell it and shake it. If it smells like damp feathers or doesn’t feel completely dry, continue tumble drying until it’s completely dry and fresh.

  • Expect it to take time for the pillow to dry completely.
